With only 60 days until the Spanish general election on December 20, Mariano Rajoy’s PP government has threatened to apply article 155 of the Constitution that would suspend Catalonia’s autonomy. It has been a difficult week for the PP party, but also one in which it pushed through its reform of the Tribunal Constitucional, effectively turning the high court into an executive branch of the Spanish government. Meanwhile, the justice minister, Rafael Català, warned: “If necessary, it would have to be applied,” in reference to the infamous article, a statement that has also received the blessing of the deputy prime minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría.
